Our curriculum is designed to support academic success, personal development and wellbeing, ensuring that pupils leave us confident, capable and ready for the future.
What Do Pupils Learn?
Our curriculum is broad, balanced and ambitious. Pupils study a wide range of subjects, including:
· Core subjects such as English, mathematics and science
· Humanities including history, geography and religious education
· Languages, including modern foreign languages and community languages
· Creative subjects such as art, music, drama and dance
· Technology and vocational subjects, including computing, design technology and health-related courses
· Physical education and sport, promoting health and wellbeing
This breadth ensures pupils discover their strengths, interests and talents.
How Learning Is Organised
Learning is carefully planned so that knowledge and skills build over time:
· In Key Stage 3, pupils develop strong foundations across a broad range of subjects.
· In Key Stage 4, pupils build on these foundations, studying GCSEs and vocational qualifications that support their future pathways.
Subjects are taught by specialist teachers who support pupils to deepen understanding and make progress.
Personal Development and Wellbeing
Personal development is a vital part of life at Smithills School. Through Session 0, PSHE and enrichment activities, pupils learn about:
· Relationships and health education
· Mental health and wellbeing
· British values and citizenship
· Financial education and life skills
· Careers, aspirations and future planning
This helps pupils develop confidence, resilience and strong character.
How We Support All Pupils
We are committed to ensuring that all pupils succeed:
· Teaching is adapted to meet a range of needs and abilities.
· Pupils with additional needs receive appropriate support and guidance.
· High expectations are combined with care, encouragement and challenge.
Assessment and Progress
Teachers regularly check pupils’ understanding and progress. Feedback helps pupils know how to improve, while assessments help staff plan lessons and provide support where needed.
Preparing for the Future
Our curriculum helps pupils develop the qualifications, skills and attitudes needed for further education, training and employment. Pupils leave Smithills School prepared for the next stage of their journey and confident in their ability to succeed.
We are proud of the rich and ambitious curriculum we offer and the positive impact it has on our pupils’ lives.
