MP for Bolton West Visit
On Friday, 1st May, Phil Brickell, the MP for Bolton West, came to Smithills to talk to pupils about the voting age being brought down from 18 to 16.
Phil introduced himself, and then the pupils worked in small groups, discussing their thoughts and opinions about lowering the voting age. Pupils also talked about the concerns they have for the area of Bolton - the concerns they have now, but also the concerns they have for when they are older. Issues ranged from litter and homelessness to career paths and future choices.
Phil listened to everything our pupils had to say and gave thoughtful answers, giving insights into how Westminster works and how policy decisions are formed in politics. He also gave insights into his passion and concerns for the people of Bolton, particularly the young people in our town.

The afternoon was a great opportunity to explore and discuss issues which directly affect young people in Bolton and in the country as a whole.

This is the second time Phil has visited our school. He is also our guest speaker at the awards ceremony in July, and we are thrilled that he is taking such an active role in working with our school.
