Children identified as International New Arrivals (INA) are those who have migrated to the UK for various reasons, such as economic immigration, educational opportunities, or seeking asylum.
At Smithills, we are proud that over 12% of our student body comprises INA students, contributing to the vibrant and diverse community that defines our school. From the moment they arrive, we ensure that our INA students feel welcomed, valued, and part of the Smithills family, fostering a strong sense of belonging.
Our INA students receive personalised, targeted support through regular intervention sessions. As part of this, they follow a systematic synthetic phonics programme, designed to build strong reading foundations and accelerate their English language development. This ensures that students not only make academic progress but also gain the language skills they need to succeed across all subjects. Additionally, students who are new to English are equipped with iPads to enhance their understanding in the classroom. We also provide translated resources, including curriculum booklets, to ensure they can fully engage with the curriculum.
To further support their learning, our dedicated team of INA Teaching Assistants (TAs) offers specialist in-class assistance, providing tailored support for students in both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. Through continuous monitoring and tracking of each student's progress, we are committed to ensuring that every INA student reaches their full potential—academically, linguistically, and personally.
