Curriculum Overview

Session 0 forms the school’s Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) and Character Education curriculum. It is designed to support pupils’ personal development, wellbeing and readiness for life beyond school. Through a carefully sequenced programme from Year 7 to Year 11, pupils develop character, resilience, moral understanding, financial awareness and the skills needed to make safe, informed choices. The curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and central to the school’s wider ethos and safeguarding responsibilities.

Curriculum Intent

The intent of the Session 0 curriculum is to ensure that pupils:

· Develop strong character traits such as courage, integrity, perseverance, compassion and gratitude.

· Understand and apply British Values, including democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance.

· Build knowledge and skills related to physical and mental wellbeing.

· Learn how to form and maintain healthy relationships, and recognise unhealthy or unsafe situations.

· Develop financial literacy, including budgeting, money management and responsible decision-making.

· Understand rights, responsibilities and citizenship, including human rights and community involvement.

· Are prepared for adulthood, further education, employment and independent living.

The curriculum supports safeguarding, promotes positive behaviour and ensures pupils are equipped to navigate modern life confidently and responsibly.

Curriculum Design and Sequencing

Session 0 is structured as a spiral curriculum, with key themes revisited and deepened as pupils mature. Content is age-appropriate and responsive to pupils’ developmental needs.

Key Stage 3 Progression (Years 7–9)

· In Year 7, pupils focus on transition to secondary school, friendships, growth mindset and core character values. Themes include British Values, charity, homelessness, behaviour in the community and personal wellbeing.

· In Year 8, pupils deepen their understanding of identity, relationships and decision-making, including peer pressure, healthy and unhealthy relationships, human rights and personal finance.

· In Year 9, pupils explore social responsibility and moral decision-making, addressing topics such as discrimination, ageism, valuing life, money choices, conflict and the impact of religion and belief on society.

Across Key Stage 3, character virtues are revisited monthly, supporting consistent language and expectations around behaviour and conduct.

Key Stage 4 Progression (Years 10–11)

· In Year 10, pupils focus on preparation for adulthood, including changing relationships, online safety, financial responsibility, career planning, CV writing and wellbeing.

· In Year 11, the curriculum supports pupils through exam readiness and transition beyond school, with a focus on resilience, revision strategies, mental health, safeguarding, financial independence and wider world awareness.

Throughout Key Stage 4, pupils are encouraged to apply character values to real-life contexts, decision-making and future planning.
