Beauty and the beast

Pupils from Smithills School will present their next musical, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, from Monday, November 25th, to Wednesday, November 27th. A much-loved family favourite, this magical fairytale musical features many well-known and much-loved songs, including ‘Be Our Guest’ and ‘Tale as Old as Time’. The cast also features popular characters, including Mrs Potts, Lumiere, and Cosgworth, all made famous by the 1991 animated film.

The musical takes us on a magical journey between the characters, Belle and the Beast. Belle, who wants so much more, suddenly finds herself imprisoned in an enchanted castle for her father’s release, but the question is will the Beast earn her love before it is too late? Grace Pearce, Year 11 pupil, who plays Belle, states ‘I have thoroughly enjoyed taking the leading role this year, I have had lots of lines and songs to learn but we have all worked together to support each other’. Rowan Beswick, a Year 11 pupil, takes the lead as the Beast, Rowan is usually found in the lighting box, but this year he has decided to take a role on stage.

Pupils have been busy rehearsing during lunchtimes and after school to bring this wonderful musical to life. The performing arts provision at Smithills School allows pupils to perform and take an active role in backstage and technical aspects. Year 10 Pupil, Nathan Wood, states ‘this year I have thoroughly enjoyed leading on designing and planning the stage lights for this production’ whilst Year 9 and Year 10 pupils, Aaliyah Patel and Aqsa Patel, have been busy planning and organising all the props and set backstage.
