work experience

Wow, what a busy week we had in Careers last week with Year 10 Work Experience, 180 pupils on Work Experience, 14 pupils on a Work Ready Programme and 50 pupils attended school workshops - coordinated by Mrs Bennett our careers leader.

The pupils that remained in school for the week had 5 sessions per day with Adam Corbally from the Apprentice- Enterprise Event Salford & Bolton College, Edge Hill University, Greater Manchester Police, Asda, and Stateside Food. GMPLN Apprenticeships, NatWest Bank, Robertson Construction and GM higher. The workshops gave them all the next steps skills such as CV writing, Applying for Jobs, Personal Statements, Finance workshops on how to manage money, and how to apply to college.

We are very appreciative of employer involvement with our programme, as we truly believe Work Experience provides an extremely valuable opportunity for young people to gain experience in a real working environment, and therefore better prepare them for the transition from school to employment. A work placement also helps individuals extend their personal life skills and have more appreciation for the employability skills needed to enter the world of work in the future. As an addition, many students often seek out and receive valuable career information and guidance whilst in the workplace.

The programme here at Smithills has been operating for a great many years now, and it has been a real pleasure receiving students back each year with improved self-esteem, a renewed enthusiasm to learn and a more focused attitude to their futures.
