A Message from the HeadteacherWe are delighted that you wish to find out about Smithills School and very much hope that this website will help you to understand more about our school. We hope you get a feel for this vibrant and exciting Specialist Performing Arts school which puts pupils first and genuinely believes that every single pupil matters. As a Specialist School, we are part of a progressive group of schools and are therefore different to many other secondary schools locally and nationally. We have created a distinctive and innovative curriculum for all our pupils around our core goal of Personalising Learning. We have restructured the curriculum in Year 7 to include Essential Skills and MSI programmes. The Essential Skills Programme is delivered on two full mornings and one afternoon each week. Pupils are taught English, History, Geography, RE and Citizenship by a single specialist teacher and thoroughly enjoy the consistency this provides. The MSI programme is similarly taught by a single teacher who delivers Mathematics, Science and Information Technology. These programmes provide our pupils with an excellent transition from Primary school. Their focus is to develop confident learners by building supportive and cohesive learning communities within every classroom. Pupils clearly enjoy the stability these programmes provide and the flexibility they offer to develop team skills, project work and independent learning. As an Extended Services School we provide year round educational activities for pupils and our local community. Smithills School is an exciting school with an exciting future.
