INFORMATION FOR PARENTS
THE SEPTEMBER GUARANTEE
All young people completing Year 11 are entitled to an offer, by the end of September, of a suitable place of learning. This is known as the September Guarantee. The offer must be appropriates for the young person’s individual needs, that means it must be of the right level, geographical location, occupational sector and learning method.
The offer must be one of the following

Full or part-time education in school, sixth form college, independent learning provider, of FE college.

An apprenticeship or programme-led apprenticeship. This MUST include both the training element and a job with a work placement.

Entry to Employment E2E.

Employment with training to NVQ level 2.
To help meet this obligation, your child has the opportunity to see a Personal Adviser from Connexions for a one-to-one interview where they can discuss the options available to them. As a Parent/Carer you are also welcome to attend the interview. Please contact Mrs Thomas the Careers Administrator who will arrange a convenient appointment.
GCSE Results Day
Smithills School ensures that pupils are supported when receiving their GCSE results by having Personal Advisers from the Connexions Service available for help and guidance. Advisers are also available at The Gap on Halliwell Road and at their main office in Bolton town centre.
EDUCATION MAINTENANCE ALLOWANCE
If your child stays in learning after 16, Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) could give them up to £30 per week to help with their costs.
EMA packs are available from the Careers Office.
