Equalities Objectives

The Equality Act 2010 requires schools and academies to complying with the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED)

There are three main elements to the PSED, namely the need to:

1. eliminate discrimination and other conduct that is prohibited by the Act

2. advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it by:

  • removing or minimising disadvantages suffered by people that are connected to a particular characteristic they have
  • taking steps to meet the particular needs of people who have a particular characteristic, and
  • encouraging people who have a particular characteristic to participate fully in any activities

3. foster good relations across all characteristics - between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.

There are nine protected characteristics: race, disability, sex, age, religion or belief, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity and gender reassignment.

Smithills School is committed to ensuring that no students or staff face discrimination of any form and that the Smithills family is a happy and thriving community.

Our equalities objectives are:

  • To promote spiritual, moral, social and cultural development through all appropriate curricular and extra-curricular opportunities.  We aim to meet this objective with particular reference to issues of equality and diversity.

  • To reduce prejudice and increase understanding of equality and diversity through direct teaching across the curriculum, in particular through Session Zero and RE.

  • To narrow the gap that exists between key groups in our school including gender gaps, and differences between disadvantaged and other pupils

  • To eradicate prejudice related bullying in relation to the protected characteristics listed in the Equality Act 2010.

These objectives will be reviewed by governors annually.
